Why is the payment page shown in the wrong language?

Your shop is in German (or another language), but your customers see the payment page in English. The customer's browser settings are usually not the cause.

How the language is chosen

Every transaction carries a language. Wallee Portal shows the payment page, iFrame and lightbox in this language.

  • If your shop or plugin sends a language when it creates the transaction, this language is always used — even if the customer's browser asks for another language.
  • If no language is sent, the payment page uses the preferred language of the customer's browser.

So if every customer sees the same wrong language, regardless of device and browser, your shop is almost certainly sending that language with the transaction.

How to check

  1. In Wallee Portal, open Payment > Transactions and open one of the affected transactions.
  2. Compare the Language field of the transaction with the Accept Language Header in the customer details.

If the transaction says English (United States) while the header starts with de-DE, the language comes from your shop.

Resolution for WordPress / WooCommerce

The plugin passes on the language that WordPress reports internally. This is not necessarily the language visitors see in the frontend.

  1. In your WordPress backend, go to Settings > General and set Site Language to the language of your shop. The WordPress default is English (United States).
  2. If you use a multilingual or translation plugin (for example WPML, Polylang or TranslatePress), check the default language configured there.
  3. Clear your shop's cache if you use a caching plugin, and place a new test order.
info

The language is stored when the transaction is created. Transactions that already exist keep their language — only new transactions are affected by the change.

Other shop systems and own integrations

Check which language your shop system or your integration sends when it creates the transaction (language field of the transaction). Either send the language of your shop or customer, or omit the field so that the browser language is used.
