Coupons & Discounts
Coupons allow merchants to grant subscription discounts to both existing subscribers and new customers. A coupon is a configuration that defines discounts and rules, while coupon codes are the actual values shared with customers. By sharing coupon codes, customers can redeem them and receive discounts on their subscriptions.
Create and manage coupons in:
Space > Subscriptions > Coupons
You can change a coupon’s configuration after creation. Updates are stored as pending changes until you explicitly activate them. Pending changes can be edited or activated at any time. Once activated, they immediately affect all subscriptions where the coupon has been redeemed.
Coupon concepts
Redemption vs. application
Redemption is the process of entering a coupon code and linking it to a subscription. Application is the process of granting the discount when a fee is charged. A coupon must be redeemed before it can be applied.
Coupons vs. coupon codes
A coupon is not the same as a coupon code. A coupon is the reusable configuration (discounts and rules). A coupon code is the value shared with subscribers. One coupon can generate multiple codes; all codes share the same discount and rules. Subscribers redeem coupon codes, not the coupon itself.
Active vs. inactive
A coupon code can only be redeemed if both the coupon and the coupon code are active. If either is inactive, redemption fails. Already redeemed codes will continue to be applied even if they are later deactivated.
Discounts
Coupons can grant either a percentage discount or a fixed amount discount. If more than one coupon code is redeemed for the same subscription, percentage discounts are always applied before fixed amount discounts. If currencies do not match, fixed discounts are automatically converted to the subscription’s billing currency.
Discount calculation
Discounts are calculated whenever a ledger entry is created. For metered fees, amount discounts are granted per billing period, not per unit.
Example
- Subscription period: 1 month
- Metered fee: EUR 0.10 per unit
- Coupon: EUR 10 discount
- Usage: 500 units
Calculation: 500 × 0.10 = EUR 50 → EUR 50 - EUR 10 = EUR 40
The EUR 10 amount discount is applied once in the period, not per unit.
Rules
Coupons can include redemption rules and application rules to restrict when and how they can be used. If no rules are set, a coupon can be redeemed by anyone, for any subscription, and applied without limits.
Define rules carefully. At minimum, set a fee type rule to avoid a discount being applied multiple times when a product has several fee types (e.g. setup fee, period fee, metered fee).
Limit rules
- Redemption limits are tracked per coupon code.
- Application limits are tracked per subscription.
Additional details:
- Removing a redeemed coupon code frees up the redemption slot.
- A coupon cannot be redeemed more than once for the same subscription.
- Two codes from the same coupon cannot be redeemed for the same subscription.
Example: a coupon has a redemption limit of 5 and an application limit of 6.
- Each coupon code can be redeemed 5 times.
- With 10 codes, up to 50 redemptions are possible.
- Each redemption applies to 6 subscription charges → up to 300 discounted charges in total.
If a subscription contains multiple components, the discount applies to each component unless restricted. Every discount application counts toward the application limit, even if fees are charged together in the same period.
Coupons and subscriptions
Redemption
Coupons are redeemed for a specific subscription. Redemption can be performed by the merchant or the subscriber.
Merchant redemption
Merchants can redeem coupon codes directly on the subscription page. They can also remove existing codes; removal takes effect immediately and the discount will not apply to future charges.
Subscriber redemption
During onboarding, after choosing a product, subscribers can enter coupon codes. At this stage, codes are associated with the account but are not yet validated.
After onboarding:
- Setup fee and period fee discounts are shown as estimates.
- Metered fee discounts are indicated (not estimated), because amounts depend on usage.
When the account is activated, the subscription is created and coupon codes are redeemed. Redemption may fail at this time if the code has become unredeemable in the meantime (e.g., due to an end-date rule).
Billing and invoices
Applied discounts appear in the subscription ledger entry, the period bill, and the PDF invoice sent to the subscriber by email.
Use cases
The coupon system is flexible; choose a strategy that matches how you plan to distribute discounts.
Single coupon code with multiple redemptions
Use one reusable code (e.g., BLACKFRIDAY2025) to share widely. This is simple to set up and manage, but you cannot disable individual codes and customers may share the code with others.
Multiple coupon codes with single redemption
Generate unique codes with a redemption limit of one. This prevents code sharing and allows you to enable/disable codes individually, but requires more management effort.
